KNX Rework Rarely Comes from Wrong Wiring - It Comes from Miscounted Channels

KNX projects have a particular quality: by the time a problem appears, the walls are closed. Three causes dominate: channel counts sized by room count instead of by load type, leaving too few outputs; panel logic too thin, so every scene depends on a central controller and any later change means re-programming; and a configuration tool version mismatch discovered on commissioning day. This guide follows the right order - outputs first, panels second, integration last - which is also the order that keeps the installation open for the shortest possible time.

Step One: Choose Modules by Load Type and Gang Count

YHOPE's KNX module range covers 17 models, with output capacity spanning 8 / 28 gangs at 10A, 4 / 8 / 12 / 20 gangs at 16A, and 4 / 8 / 12 gangs at 20A. Dimming options include 0-10V dimming (4 / 6 gangs) and 1-10V dimming (4 gangs), alongside a 960mA power supply, the DTMO super gateway, an 8-gang universal interface at 12V, and a USB downloader.

Circuit typeSuggested outputWatch out for
General lighting10A / 16A multi-gang moduleGroup by room, keep 1-2 spare gangs
High-load lighting, socket circuits20A module (4/8/12 gangs)Greater per-circuit capacity
Dimmable luminaires0-10V (4/6 gangs) or 1-10V (4 gangs)Confirm the driver interface first
Power and commissioning960mA supply, USB downloaderCheck bus power headroom before commissioning
Third-party device inputs8-gang universal interface, 12VFor dry-contact and analogue inputs

A workable sequence: set module class from real current per circuit, aggregate gang counts by room, then verify total bus power headroom. The DTMO super gateway organises multi-gang modules into a manageable structure, and configuration runs on ETS5.7+. One practical note that saves commissioning days: order the 960mA power supply and the USB downloader in the same shipment as the modules. Delays on KNX projects are more often a missing power or programming accessory than a missing output module.

Step Two: Panel Logic Determines Long-Term Maintenance Cost

A panel is not just a switch. The X18L KNX panel offers 8-key scenes, dual-colour LED indication, and 8 channels of logic plus 8 event groups, which means part of the interlock logic can sit on the panel rather than the central controller, and later scene adjustments touch less of the system. The K30-KNX panel is PCB-compatible with 1 / 4 / 6 keys and can additionally be supplied as an 8-key unit, which suits developments where key layouts differ room by room and helps standardise spare parts.

Step Three: The Fusion Gateway Handles Everything KNX Does Not

In real projects KNX carries the deterministic part, but owners still ask for a phone app, voice control, and wireless wall devices. The KNX fusion gateway LG1 places a KNX bus and ZigBee / BLE on one device with 200 channels and 30+ device types, configured on ETS5.7+ as well. The value is that no second system is needed for the wireless portion: engineering-grade certainty stays on the KNX side while wireless keeps room for expansion and mobile control. Where shading and thermostats are also in scope, plan them alongside the platform's wide-voltage (40-400V) and surge-tolerant (4kV) product range, so that panel, module and gateway selections are documented as one package rather than three separate orders.

Specification Checklist

  • [ ] List real current per circuit and set module class: 10A / 16A / 20A
  • [ ] Count gangs per room with spare capacity - never order by room count alone
  • [ ] For dimming, confirm whether the driver interface is 0-10V or 1-10V
  • [ ] Verify bus power capacity (960mA supply) against module count
  • [ ] Plan the 8-gang universal 12V interface where dry-contact or analogue inputs are needed
  • [ ] Where logic must be local, specify a panel with onboard logic (X18L KNX panel: 8 channels, 8 event groups)
  • [ ] For multi-key developments, use a panel family supporting 1/4/6/8 keys (for example K30-KNX) to standardise spares
  • [ ] Where wireless expansion is required, plan the fusion gateway (LG1: 200 channels, 30+ device types)
  • [ ] Confirm configuration tool version (ETS5.7+) and project file compatibility
  • [ ] Confirm warranty (5 years) and the programming support arrangement

FAQ

What is the most common KNX selection mistake?

Sizing by room count instead of by circuit current and actual gang count. The correct order is to convert per-circuit current into module class (10A / 16A / 20A), aggregate gang counts by room with spare capacity, then verify bus power headroom.

How do I choose between 0-10V and 1-10V dimming modules?

It depends on the luminaire driver interface - the two are not interchangeable. YHOPE offers 0-10V dimming (4 / 6 gangs) and 1-10V dimming (4 gangs). Confirm the on-site driver's control interface before selecting.

Can KNX panels hold their own logic without a central controller?

Partly. The X18L KNX panel provides 8-key scenes, dual-colour LED indication, 8 channels of logic and 8 event groups, allowing part of the interlock logic to live on the panel, reducing controller dependency and making later changes lighter.

We already run KNX - do we still need a wireless gateway?

It depends on owner requirements. If a phone app, voice control, or later wireless wall devices are needed, the KNX fusion gateway LG1 puts the KNX bus and ZigBee/BLE on one device with 200 channels and 30+ device types, so no separate wireless system is required.

Which configuration tool version is used?

YHOPE's KNX schemes are configured on ETS5.7+. Agree the version with the integrator at tender stage so a project file does not turn out to be unreadable on commissioning day.
