The Module Fits, It Powers Up, and Nothing Works

Retrofit projects hit this constantly. A wall box already has a touch switch in it, the client wants app control, and the obvious move is to put a small smart module behind the existing switch rather than replace it. The module goes in, it lights up, the app pairs. Then the real behaviour appears: the app never knows whether the light is on, the switch presses do nothing in the app, or the lamp glows faintly when it should be off.

The cause is almost never a faulty module. It is that a module and a touch switch do not provide each other with the two things the pairing requires.

A Module Needs a Contact to Read, and a Touch Switch Has None

Modules that sit behind an existing switch work by sensing the switch's electrical state. They expect a mechanical contact: closed or open, with a clean voltage difference across it. A capacitive touch switch is not a contact. Its output stage is electronic, so there is no clean open/closed state to measure. The module is not broken; it simply has nothing to read.

This is the single most common misunderstanding in retrofit planning, and it is worth confirming before purchase rather than after installation: does the module expect a mechanical switch input, and does the switch actually provide one.

The Second Problem: No Neutral Is Not Just "No Wire"

Many modules are supplied from L and N, so they need a real neutral at the box. A no-neutral wall box does not have one, and that is not an oversight in the wiring - it is the design. A no-neutral switch powers itself from a small continuous current through the load loop. Two devices on the same loop both trying to live off that arrangement tend to produce the classic symptoms: faint glow, flicker, clicks, or a device that drops offline overnight.

Check These Three Things Before Ordering

Three Routes That Work

1. **Pull a neutral into the box.** If the conduit will take it, the position stops being a special case and most of the range opens up. This is the cleanest long-term answer, and worth doing whenever walls are already open.
2. **Keep the module, change the switch.** Put a plain mechanical switch where the touch switch was. This is the arrangement the module assumes, and it removes the compatibility question entirely.
3. **Replace the switch with a no-neutral smart switch.** Same wiring constraint as today, no extra module behind the plate, and app control is native. This route has hard limits; see below.

No-Neutral Units Have Hard Limits

Two points decide whether a no-neutral position will actually behave, and both belong on the purchase order rather than in an email thread.

Motor loads and high-voltage lamps are excluded. No-neutral panels cannot drive motor-type loads - fans and curtain motors are both out of scope. The reason is not product tier: the panel derives its own power from a small continuous current through the load loop, and motor loads present input characteristics that break that extraction. Motor positions need a neutral-required model or a dedicated motor module.

The two no-neutral technologies are not interchangeable. Magnetic-latching units need no capacitor but are limited in gang count and have weaker backlights; parallel-capacitor units support more gangs and composite switches and keep backlight behaviour consistent with neutral-required models, instead requiring a capacitor across L and N at the luminaire. Small-power LED lamps on these circuits commonly need that capacitor to behave.

Record the chosen variant, the gang count and whether a capacitor is required on the wall-box schedule itself. A variant decision that lives only in a quotation email gets lost between the first floor and the third.

FAQ

Can any smart module work behind a touch switch?

Only if the switch provides a mechanical contact the module can read. Touch switches with electronic output stages do not, regardless of the module brand.

The switch box has no neutral. Can a module that needs L and N still be used?

Not without bringing a neutral to the box. Supplying such a module from the leakage path of a no-neutral circuit is not a supported arrangement and produces unstable behaviour.

What if I want a touch switch and app control together?

Use a no-neutral smart switch in place of the existing touch switch rather than putting a module behind it. The wiring constraint stays the same and the compatibility question disappears.

Can a no-neutral unit drive a curtain motor or an exhaust fan?

No. Motor loads are out of scope for no-neutral panels; those positions require a neutral-required model or a dedicated motor module.
